Everything Here is a Nightmare
What surprised me
Was that, despite the diversity of the subjects and styles of the stories, this anthology felt like a complete experience.
You could pull any single story out of this book and enjoy it thoroughly, or barrel through from beginning to end like I did. Either way, you’ll be in for a treat.
Characters made the impact
With the exception of a few stories, it is the characters that end up living in your head after you read this. Two of my favorites were Veronique and Tom who appear in 2 western stories where zombies and other supernatural calamities occur.
Their love story is so touching, and their personalities so powerful that I seriously could read an entire series based around these two. (Which, according to the author’s note at the end of the book, Nelson is considering writing at least one book about them. And for what my opinion is worth, please right it!)
Scenes that have stuck with me
I mentioned above that there were a few exceptions to the characters being the take-away, and that is because the others stick in my mind through their plots/premise.
One in particular, the one about the haunted lighthouse, I still find my mind exploring. It’s such a frightening story and it mixes several cultures together in a way that makes it so memorable.
Verdict
5 out of 5 blood spattered stars. If you enjoy horror that spans from gore, to humor, to paranormal I think you’re going to really enjoy reading this book.
Oooh, I hate this. LOL. I always tell myself I’m not going to get another short story collection to read, then I always read another review like this one that makes me go “But…but…this one might be worth it!”

Well, I actually just read “Stealing Propeller Hats from the Dead” day before yesterday. It was one of those that put another mark in the “don’t read collections” column. It was the most UNEVEN collection I’ve ever read. The author has talent, but its definitely not evident in every story.

Yeah. Now, the last decent one I read (and one of the few) was The Humanity of Monsters.
