I’m not sure I’ve ever read anything that could be more perfectly summed up as a Magical Cozy Mystery. There’s murder, mystery, talking animals, evil land developers and a big city lawyer moving to the small town of Witchland to save an enchanted forest.
But 1st, let’s judge this book by it’s cover.
As an artist who has begun designing book covers, this one caught my eye. The illustration style itself is bright and crisp and made great use of Halloween-themed colors without going full pumpkin mode. One thing that sticks out to me as a possible negative is the lynx in the top right corner. The lynx itself is well designed, but it feels a bit plopped onto the tree, where as the other characters feel grounded in the environment. But I’m knick-picking at a cover that I genuinely love.
The cover art serves the book exceptionally well. It represents not only key elements of the story, but captures the mood of the book. It’s a playful urban fantasy book with supernatural elements.
On to the story!
But you’re not here for a cover art review, you’re here to find out if your quarantine will feel move festive and pleasant with this magical cozy mystery.
The short answer is, yes. Yes it will.
The story opens with Sarah Spellwood having an exceptionally hard day after having a particularly dreadful year. (Sounds like 2020 to me.) Recently divorced and fed up with her job she comes home to find out that her close friend and mentor has passed away having left her everything, including his dog Addie. But something tells her, there’s more to her mentor’s death than meets the eye.
And so the mystery begins!
Sarah moves to Witchland, where her mentor had lived, and proceeds to investigate his death while falling in love with the town. Along the way, she meets some quirky characters, some nefarious ones, and quite a few magical and fluffy ones! My favorite by far is Addie the dog. She made every moment in this book feel so dang wholesome.
“Witch’s Tail,” is the perfect Halloween-Vibe mystery to cuddle up with while drinking your favorite fall beverage. It’s full of magic, playful, and never gets too dark. It was a fun fluffy book! (Pun intended for the adorable supporting role of Addie the dog.)Tweet
If you’re looking for something spooky and playful to get you in the mood for spooky season in an upbeat way, I certainly recommend this book!
